Lindsay template grinds

Published nominal angles

Select a template to see its nominal point geometry. These settings describe Lindsay’s template system; they are not GRS tool-dial rotations.

Point V schematic, not a measured belly section. Template-controlled relief and rotation angles are not inferred from the nominal V.

Universal instructions list about 16.5° heel in the introductory description and 16.3° in the length table at 1¼ inches; shown as approximately 16.5°. The three protrusion examples are discrete references, not an interpolation formula.

Body section normal to the shaft; not the final cutting-edge angle.

Side profile · face & top taper

Face and top taper angles drawn to angle. Heel shown schematically; no physical heel length is inferred from angle alone.

Surface / operationPost tiltTool rotation

Rotation means turning the graver around its lengthwise axis. L/R are equal rotations to either side of the bottom reference; post tilt is a separate movement. Re-index 180° to grind the top/face. Match your fixture’s reference marks before using the settings; “0°” is not universal between fixtures.

What the numbers mean

The V angle describes the body. Parallel heel grinding uses extra rotation, so the resulting heel geometry is narrower than that body V. A “120° graver” does not mean every facet forms 120°.

The GRS mode reproduces the published reference table, including its 2.5° bottom relief. Custom mode implements Allen Clapp’s published formula for straight sides with no longitudinal relief. It does not extrapolate that formula to relieved bellies or reproduce Lindsay templates.

Formula & assumptions
A = (180 − V) / 2
Q = A + asin[sin(H) × cos(V / 2) / tan(F)]
L = d / tan(T)

A: shaping rotation; Q: parallel heel rotation; H: heel post lift; F: face angle from shaft; T: top taper from shaft; d: vertical height removed; L: taper run. Trigonometry uses radians internally. Custom mode follows Clapp’s published construction, not an independent fixture calibration.

The 10° top default is a starting value from Lindsay’s tapering guidance. The taper-run calculation is a separate right-triangle model. It assumes a flat top and a specified height reduction; it cannot determine remaining tip strength without blank and tip dimensions.
